(pre-race)
The name says it all! I did my first 5k (yes, a 5k at 5 months pregnant, pretty cool) today and ran the 4th annual "Run With Cops Not From Them" 5k at Marymoor park. Matt and I ran with some of his coworkers and various PD (and even FIRE) spouses. I was nervous to run since I'm not a runner by any means, but seeing familiar faces and thinking I'd survive got me through. I even ran into my friend Paul, a Redmond Fire fighter who was nursing an injury and was kind enough to run with me. Matt stayed with me for the first 1/4 mile and then wanted to go faster, so off he went. He and Allan are more conditioned for running, Allan finished in 19 minutes and Matt in 25.
I got a little hot running and your typical "I'm running and I'm short of breath" feeling but Paul kept me paced and we even passed a few people. The weather was overcast and a bit drizzly but overall comfortable for a 0900 run.
I was happy to have jogged 90% of the run, only stopping to walk twice for a brief period and to tie my shoe. It was a neat feeling to sprint across the finish line, but I don't know where that energy came from. Paul and I finished in 31 minutes and I'm pretty excited. Definitely not the fastest, but I wasn't the last either. Certainly had I trained I could improve, and the number can go down over time. We think we'll make this run an annual event and take Little Miss next year. Certainly fun to run with cops from all over, get a neat T-shirt, and benefit the Behind the Badge Foundation. Many people wore shirts honoring the 6 officers we've lost in the last year in the line of duty. King County Sheriff's Department brought a SWAT vehicle that they opened up for kids (and more adults, I think) to "investigate" and had their K9, Rommel with them. He was huge but remarkably friendly and I loved that hairy dog.
Tired and sore now, but happy to have accomplished a goal. Great times with great officers!
Thanks Paul for running with me and for supporting the officers! When fire has a 5k, we'll run with you!
Matt and Allan, the dynamic duo!
Post race, a little red and tired but happy!
Redmond Fire guy and spouse of a KPD office gal, Ammus, Matt Yang, Allan, Julia, Matt, Susan and I. KPD representing, minus a few who we couldn't find for the "group" shot
Candice and I. Candice beat me and she was pushing a double stroller! I'll get her next year!
